Since 2009, El Toto café offers us compositions that find their inspiration in typical drinks from all over the world. After their first album “Tututu Toto!” and a tour on the streets of Belgium and France, the two friends start exploring new flavours in a “drinking folk” that they distil with generosity.
Today, they come back with their new album “Bourbon in my coffee” which has been released in autumn 2014 under the label Homerecords.be (modern folk).
Their music makes us dive with closed eyes and perked ears in the aphrodisiac vapours and other perfumes, mixed to the bitterness of the roasted coffee.

Melissa Laveaux - Camphor and Copper

Mélissa Michelle Marjolec Laveaux(born 9 January 1985) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist of Haitian descent signed to No Format!. Her music has been described as a mix of roots, folk, and blues using her signature percussive finger-style guitar and soulful vocal stylings. In 2006, Laveaux released a first full-length album of her own songs. It was co-produced with percussionist Rob Reid (on tabla and cajón) and Lisa Patterson of Imaginit Music Studios.Laveaux has received critical praise from her peers in such magazines as Colorlines and is a Songs from the Heart recipient from the 2006 Ontario Council of Folk Festivals' conference in the World Music category for penning "Koud'lo".

Mélissa has opened for several artists who have inspired her music: Meshell Ndegeocello, Feist and Lura. She's also performed at jazz and popular music festivals around the globe. Although most of her performances have been in France, she regularly performs in Japan and Spain. Festivals that have featured Laveaux include the Montreal International Jazz Festival (2007, 2009 and 2010), Cully Jazz, Donostia Jazzaldia, Festival du Bout du Monde (2008), Les Francofolies de La Rochelle (2009), Sakifo Musik Festival in La Réunion Island and le Printemps de Bourges. She has been a featured guest on CBC Radio's local programs Ottawa Morning and All in a Day and its national radio broadcasts Bandwidth, Canada Live, and Go!.

Ulla Pirttijarvi - Aibbaseabmi

Ulla es considerada como una de los mejores artistas de Laponia ("Samiland"). Ella ha trabajado en conjunto con Frode Fjellheim quien produjo sus últimos dos discos editados en Warner Music en 1998 y 2002.

The primal sound of the joik is simply undeniable. It goes straight to the gut and the heart, evoking the sense of icy plains, the nomad Saami wandering. Atmospheric without every becoming New Agey, Pirttijarvi and her band weave a fine spell, her voice ringing, sometimes soft, sometimes brutal, over a basic rhythm (not too dissimilar to a Native American sound) with colors and textures provided by the instruments. It’s Nordic, chilly, and stunningly beautiful. Even the normally warm cello takes on frozen overtones here, and the soprano sax whips away like a blizzard. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo - Cotonou Club

Sí, otra vez Strut es el responsable del retorno de algún grande de la historia musical africana. En este caso le toca el turno a la legendaria Orquesta Poly-Rythmo, también conocida como TP Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, que, después de veinte años sin publicar álbum, ha visto como, en los albores de la pasada primavera, salía a la venta su último y novedoso proyecto de- nominado Cotonou Club. Completamente producido en Paris con equipos analógicos incluídos, el nuevo álbum de esta formación repasa, en clave de afrobeat, afro-funk, jazz y elementos folklóricos de Benin, un repertorio basado en una mezcla entre algunos de sus clásicos como “Gbeti Madjro” y algo de material nuevo que siempre se agradece. Además, y como aliciente, a los cinco miembros originales que todavía la integran hay que sumar interesantes apariciones de artistas contemporáneos como la siempre eficiente Angélique Kidjo, la emergente gran vocalista maliense Fatoumata Diawara y hasta gente procedente de la música popular como la aparición de dos miembros de Franz Ferdinand en el último tema del trabajo, “Lion Is Burning”.

Eritrea’s Got Soul (Outhere Records, 2010) es la confirmación de que, a pesar de las malas noticias sobre esta región de África durante treinta años de guerra, la música que se popularizó en los setenta en la vecina Adis-Abeba como Ethio-Jazz (movimiento del cual la mayoría de los músico eran eritreos) ha sido capaz de evolucionar hacia nuevos y fértiles derroteros, destilados des de la capital del país, en el Mar Rojo.

La influencia de la música jamaicana y el movimiento rastafari en Etiopía, el auge de la música occidental como el rock o el pop, los afroamericanos R&B y Soul, el esplendor de la música folk africana de la década de las independencias… hicieron que músicos como Ibrahim Goret, Brkti Weldeslassie, Adam Hamid, Temasgen Yared o Sara Teklesenbet surgieran como auténticas estrellas de la música eritrea contemporánea. Ahora, y bajo la inteligente producción del francés Bruno Blum, estos músicos han creado el proyecto Asmara All Stars, sacándole el máximo partido al sonido analógico y a los instrumentos abisinios tradicionales, pero también combinándolos con instrumentos modernos y estilos actuales, hammonds y hip hop, en la que se puede considerar la propuesta más importante de uno de los países más jóvenes del mundo (existente desde 1993), con una de las tradiciones sonoras más antiguas del Planeta.

Gran investigador y musicólogo vasco, hoy le toca el turno a su primer trabajo en solitario, bueno más bien diría que como sexteto. Le acompañan en este proyecto: Maddi Oihenart (voz), Joseba Tapia (trikitixa), Miriam Atxaerandio (violín), Oihana Irastorza (pandereta) y Joxan Goikoetxea (acordeones).

Pero aparte del sexteto principal también ponen su granito de arena: Aitor Gabilondo (voz), Iñigo Lurgain (acordeón), Iñigo Monreal (djembe, txalaparta), Felipe Ugarte (txalaparta, ttipiuntzia http://www.herrimusika.org/bildumak/ikusi.php?id=es&p=1150) y Laurentx Oihenart (voz)

El disco fue producido por Suso Sáiz (aparte colabora con la guitarra y el pandero) y en él se hace un recorrido completo por la música tradicional vasca, digamos que toca todos los palos (nunca mejor dicho). Arditurri es el nombre de un yacimiento minero romano que se sitúa en el Parque Natural de Aiako Harria.

Michael Vetter - Tambura Meditations (1983) [Alemania]

 Compositores como Stockhausen, Kagel, Bussotti y Louis Andriessen se inspiraron en las técnicas de multifónicos y microtonos estudiadas por Michael Vetter desde muy jovencito tocando la grabadora (especie de flauta). Pero dejando aparte su obra contemporánea basada en la improvisación, la mayor influencia en su futura obra se debe a que vivió diez años en Japón como monje Zen. Allí dominó entre otros instrumentos: el koto, los cuencos cantores, la tambura y los gongs. También trabajó los cantos difónicos que tanto gustan a mi colaborador B.Rother.
 Pero aparte de la música, este inquieto hombre que por desgracia falleció en diciembre de 2013, dominaba la caligrafía, la pintura, la novela y la poesía. Como podéis comprobar, un verdadero artista en el sentido más amplio de la palabra.
 Hoy os presento este disco dedicado enteramente a la tambura, consta de dos largos temas que os harán viajar a tierras hindúes sin necesidad de pasar largas horas en avión.

Joxan Goikoetxea, innovador y activo músico vasco nacido en Hernani cuyos inicios fueron la danza vasca y el canto, primeramente con el txistu y luego con el acordeón. Ambos instrumentos los complementa con estudios en el Conservatorio Superior de Donostia y estudios en Le Thor (Francia) donde será influenciado por el acordeonista francés Richard Galliano. Desde 1985 es profesor en la Hernaniko Musika Eskola.

Juan Mari Beltran Argiñena, intérprete, estudioso, constructor y profesor de música en el mismo colegio que Goikoetxea y al igual que éste promociona por todo el mundo la música popular vasca. Toca una gran variedad de instrumentos: txalaparta, tobera (parecida a la txalaparta pero en vez de maderas como base utiliza barras de hierro), clarinete, txistu, alboka, eltzegor (tambor de fricción tipo zambomba), gaita de odre... En el año 2002 inauguró un centro en Oiartzun denominado Herri Musikaren Txokoa donde tiene una exposición de más de 1000 instrumentos musicales de todo el mundo y que está dedicado a la difusión y estudio de la música tradicional de Euskadi.

Terje Isungset - Igloo

The Norwegian percussion settled into an ice hotel near the Arctic Circle, built all of his instruments out of ice, and recorded this unique and beautiful work, accompanied on some tracks by the wordless vocals of Sidsel Endresen. It does not get more unique than this!

The artist writes:
In 2003 Terje Isungset did an ice concert at the Ice Hotel in North Sweden. The quality of the ice that year harvested from Tårnelven was exceptional. Ice Hotel let us store a block of the river ice for possible future use. In 2004 Terje returned to record the second ice CD. Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi was naturally selected as the site. The block of ice from the previous winter was still there, safe and secure! In addition 32 igloos were left over from a wedding of a Polish rock star. They became the most amazing recording studio. Tor Magne Hallibakken used one igloo as his control room, placing Sidsel Endresen in another and Terje Isungset in a third. Stable weather at -10 to -20 degrees C was perfect for the project. The studio space was -4 - 6 and perfectly silent.

Isungset was raised in Geilo where he played traditional dance music with his father (accordion) during his high school days. Moving to Bergen in 1984 led him to be a popular member of a number Bergen Groups, «Ictus» and «Tordenskjolds soldater» 1984-85, «Growl» and «Gruv» 1984-88, «Saksbehandlerne» and «Night and Day» 1985-86, «Salsa Pati» 1985-87, «Supply» 1985-88, in addition to periods within the Big Band «Emanon» from 1986, and recording debut Amalgamation (1985) with Kenneth Sivertsen

Isungset is after more than two decades on the Bergen and Norwegian Jazz scenes, one of Europe's most accomplished and innovative percussionists. With more than 20 years experience in jazz and Scandinavian traditional music he raises these narrow formes of music far beyond their traditional boundaries, becoming more like a crossover between a sound artist and a shaman. When crafting his own instruments from Norwegian natural elements such as arctic birch, granite, slate, sheep bells and even ice, he is highly recommended to those sensible to the poetry and simplicity of sounds.

His work is highly acclaimed in the press, often described as innovative, visual, energetic, and different from any previously known concepts. His love for ice music was raised in 1999 when the commission of the winterfestival at Lillehammer asked him to compose and play in a frozen waterfall.Isungset has also been commissioned to compose music for Jazz Festivals, Dance Performances, Theatre, Film, etc., with 41 commissed concerts.He has released 9 solo albums and is doing most of his work internationally. Solo concerts, with his band or in collaboration with other artists. In 2006 he started the Icemusicfestival at Geilo together with Pål Knutsson Medhus. His most recent project is the Glassmusic together with Arve Henriksen. They released an album named World of Glass in late 2014. The recordings were largely made in front of a live audience in Tallinn. Spyro Gyra - The Deep End

Spyro Gyra /ˌspaɪroʊˈdʒaɪrə/ is an American jazz fusion band that was originally formed in the mid-1970s in Buffalo, New York, United States. Their music, often featured on smooth jazz radio stations, combines jazz with elements of R&B, funk and pop music. To date, the band has released over 30 albums and sold over 10 million copies. They average about 100 live performances per year. Popular singles include "Shaker Song" and "Morning Dance" (1979).

With the exception of founding bandleader Jay Beckenstein (alto saxophonist and songwriter) and Tom Schuman (keyboardist), the personnel has changed over time, and between the studio and the live stage. Today, guitarist Julio Fernandez is also in his third decade with the band.

Kries - Kocijani (2008)

Who would have thought that one of the discoveries of the year would be a Croatian folk-rock band who revive traditional songs, but do so with a passion and verve that makes them sound contemporary, even dangerous? Their theatrical, long-haired singer, Mojmir Novakovi´c, acts like a pop star but clearly has respect for his country's folk heritage. He is backed by a band that matches an attacking rhythm section against a lineup that includes traditional goatskin bagpipes and the lijerica "knee violin", plus electric guitars and bass. On violin is the band's producer and only non-Croatian member, Martin Swan, best known for his work with the Scottish Gaelic band Mouth Music. The result is an intriguing set that veers from strong ballads and vocal harmony work to bursts of wailing rock guitar and bagpipes. Kries are best experienced live, but this is an impressive introduction.

Captain Yaba -'YABA FUNK ROOTS'

En su corta carrera musical Capitán Yaba cautivó a los oyentes con sus dos ranuras de cuerdas de guitarra calabaza, y sobre todo con la pista Yaba Funk. Él hace su instrumento, el koliko (aka molo o xalam) sonar como la raíz de todo el funk.

Capitán YabaCaptain Yaba era un Fra Fra de la ciudad de Bolgatanga el norte de Ghana, donde el país y la cultura tienen más en común con los vecinos del Sahel que las regiones centrales y costeras donde las reglas highlife.

Yaba Funk Roots es una reedición de su álbum de 1996 Tinanure, producido por Francisco Fuster, el célebre percusionista de Sierra Leona. Desafortunadamente Yaba murió poco después de la liberación de ese CD. Esta reedición RetroAfric se ha aumentado con cinco pistas de las sesiones originales de Ghana, que retienen el borde vital de canguelo griot en la que sobresalió Yaba. Llámalos premezcla, llamarlos de-mix, estas pistas traer añaden delicia para un tipo de música africana, que rara vez se escucha en Occidente.

Trois albums ont suivi chez Dixiefrog, imposant une exceptionnelle chanteuse entre folk, blues et musique traditionnelle des Amérindiens de Caroline du Nord. Pura Fé signe ici son arrivée chez Nueva Onda Records avec onze titres qui s'accompagnent d'une nouvelle direction artistique sous l'impulsion de Mathis Haug qui a supervisé l'enregistrement dans un mas du sud de la France. Guardians Of The Reef es una combinación atmosférica de sonidos increíbles de didgeridoo y flauta mezclados con voces humanas y sonidos del océano. 
El cuarto tema (Journey Dolphin) es una pieza larga, sugerente, que tiene un ritmo lento, ondulante como los delfines cabeceando a través del mar.


La vida de David Hudson refleja su amor y su fe en la cultura aborigen Australiana. Él viene de la tribu Ewamin (oo-rah-min) / Western Yalangi (gente de la costa noreste de Australia) por lo que es natural que su hogar este  en Cairns, en medio de la selva tropical y del hermoso arrecife.

Cáceres- Murga Argentina

Con este disco de 15 títulos originales, Cáceres nos conmueve de manera sencilla, directa y profunda, sin artificios y sin ninguna nota superflua. Cáceres revisita los origenes africanos del tango y basa sus creaciones sobre ritmos de murga* y milonga**. Sus canciones le dan un nuevo soplo a la música del Río de la Plata. Cáceres es a la vez autor y compositor de sus propias canciones.

Artista con multiples talentos, Cáceres canta, toca piano y trombón y está rodeado por talentuosos artistas de tango como Nini Flores,al bandoneón y al acordeón, Paul Lazar al violín y, entre otros, por los más auténticos percusionistas de Argentina. Eduardo Makaroff, el Argentino del grupo Gotan Project, está encargado de la dirección artística.

*Murga : esfera de influencia de música de calle popular, originaria de los barrios de Buenos Aires
**Milonga : ritmo que pertenece al género tango, también sinónimo de « bal tango », es una palabra de origen africano que significa « palabras ».

Petit Adama & Diarra Kan – Tounga

Adama Diarra, surnommé "Petit Adama", est élevé à Bamako dans une famille de griots. Adama Diarra s'est initié très tôt au djembé notamment avec les grands maîtres Adama Dramé et Soungalo Coulibaly. C'est avec ce dernier qu'il se fera remarquer comme soliste. Depuis il apprend et se perfectionne à la guitare et la kora. Adama Diarra sort son premier album Tounga en 2004. Il appartient à la nouvelle vague de musiciens qui fait évoluer la tradition par la composition de nouveaux rythmes et de nouvelles mélodies. Le son qu'il produit avec la kora et la ngoni, instruments à cordes traditionnels, est totalement innovant. Adama a composé de nouveaux morceaux sur une nouvelle gamme aux consonances arabo-hispaniques.

Kamal Hors - The Dance of the Lute

Kamal Hors was born in Morocco. In 1987 he co-founded of the Weshm music ensemble and performed with them in Europe, North African and the Middle East. He has collaborated with many other musicians and composed music for theatre and dance groups. In 2007 he released his debut oud CD with Sandip Bhattacharya on tabla. Hors also plays the sentir, guenbri and various percussion instruments. He currently lives in the Netherlands and has recently been working with the Trio Windstreken ensemble.
